Inauguration of Kalpana Chawla Science Block at Guru Nanak Khalsa College Yamuna Nagar (Haryana)

There cannot be more satisfying occasion for an NRI than to see one of the NRIs being honoured in the Homeland. Such an inspiring function was recently arranged under the chairmanship of Mr. Bhupinder Singh Jauhar at the opening ceremony of a Science Block named after Kalpana Chawla at Guru Nanak Khalsa College Yamuna Nagar, Haryana. Kalpana Chawla was the young Indian astronaut working with NASA died in the Colombia disaster. Her short but highly fruitful life has inspired millions of young Indian women.

The function was presided by Mr. APS Chawla, president World Punjabi Organisation (Europe) and Chief Patron of Khalsa Institutes (Yamuna Nagar) in Europe. The chief guest was Keith Vaz MP from UK; and the opening ceremony was performed by Mr. Manjit Singh Calcutta, General Secretary Shri Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee, Amritsar.

In his presidential address, Mr. APS Chawla said that naming the Science Block after Kalpana Chawla is the most appropriate way of acquainting the young Indian with this great role model for the young girls of this country. Kalpana had a strong sense of professional excellence and self-discipline that took her to the great heights of her profession at such an early age. Her love for India made her do a lot for her own school and place of birth.

Mr. Chawla also announced that World Punjabi Organisation (Europe) and MKC Trust of which he is the chairman, will be supporting the setting up of Cancer Awareness Centre in the College. The Trust will try to help the Khalsa Institutes in setting up Medical Research Centres and provide scholarships to students engaged in research in eradication of cancer.

Mr. Keith Vaz, the chief guest of the evening, addressing the students, staff and educationists gathered there, pointed out the benefits to the students going for further higher education in the United Kingdom. He welcomed the cooperation between educational institutions of both countries. He specially emphasised the recent M.O.U. signed by the Vice Chancellor of Kurukshetra University Mr. A.K Chawla and De Montefort University in Leicester, UK, through the efforts of Mr. APS Chawla, chief patron of Khalsa Institutes (Yamuna Nagar) in Europe.

Mr. Balbir Singh, the Principal of the College, welcomed the guests and announced a donation of Rs. Five lakhs given to the college by Mr. Varinder Singh Jauhar, industrialist from Delhi.Built at the cost of Rs. One crore, Kalpana Chawla Science Block will continue to inspire young students of science at the Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Yamuna Nagar.
