Homeopathic Holiday Tips

by Kiran Grover

Summer is upon us and holidays are here! With schools breaking up, family trips - aboard or days out nearer to home – are sure be on the cards. With hot weather (hopefully!) here and abroad it’s good to know that Homeopathy can help you with summer complaints such as bites, stings, and tummy upsets.

Homeopathy is easy and quick to use for non-serious, common ailments. However, if you suffer with more complex illnesses such as hay fever and allergies you should consult a qualified, professional Homeopath.

Homeopathy is a complete form of complementary medicine that treats mental, emotional, and physical complaints; it’s a holistic treatment that stimulates the body’s own healing power by identifying and addressing the cause rather than suppressing the symptoms. Homeopathy is non invasive, non-addictive and simple to use. It can be used with other types of medicines and it’s even safe to use in pregnancy and for babies and children. It is gentle and effective and does not cause any side effects.

Stings and Bites

For bee stings Apis is a useful remedy particularly if the area is bright red, hot, puffy and swollen. Other symptoms can include feeling hot and sensitive to touch, while there may also be some fluid retention. The area feels worse for heat and better for cool applications. Ledum can also be useful for insect and animal bites to relieve some of the discomfort, although appropriate medical attention may also need to be sought. Ledum is appropriate for a hot, pale swelling that is soothed by cold applications. Try Witch Hazel gel as well as it is antiseptic and healing.

Sun Burn

Too much sun can really ruin a holiday. If you do oversleep on the beach, try the Homeopathic remedy Cantharis. It’s a very effective remedy which reduces inflammation and cools and heals the skin. Cantharis is also useful for a feeling of intense burning, or a raw heat. Belladonna helps if the skin is red with a throbbing heat that is hot to the touch.

Also, try Aloe Vera gel, which can be applied to the area for cooling and healing. When bathing the burnt area it is best to use tepid water on the skin.

Sun Stroke

Keep the back of your neck and head covered, drink plenty of water and you should be fine. However, if you do suffer sun stroke, then the remedy China can be useful. Typically symptoms include dehydration and exhaustion

Stomach Ache and Food Poisoning

Summer snacks and barbeques do seem to go on forever. If you over indulge with food, drink or both then try Nux Vomica. It’s very good for upset stomachs, irritation and oversensitivity. For food poising try Arsenicum Albumen, particularly if there is restlessness, anxiety and exhaustion. Other food poisoning symptoms can be a dry mouth and a thirst quenched in small sips. They’ll also be a burning pain particularly in the stomach.

Travel Sickness

Cocculus is great for travel sickness. It eases motion-induced nausea and helps with missed or disturbed sleep. Arnica is also useful to take to help ease the symptoms of jet lag.

If you suffer from hay fever, allergies, skin problems or other more chronic complaints then it is advised to consult a qualified Homeopath. Homeopathy is a complete form of medicine which employs a holistic approach to treat mental, emotional and physical complaints. Homeopathic remedies can be purchased from most Chemists and Health Food shops and from Homeopathic pharmacies A few homeopathic remedies can help you enjoy a healthy, happy holiday safe from all these minor worries and annoyances!
