ALLERGIES IN THE UK
Allergies in the UK
At this time of year allergies, particularly hay fever, can be a real problem for many people. Allergies affect thousands of people in the UK and can range from food and environmental intolerance to chemical sensitivity. The term allergy is used to describe a response, within the body, to a substance, which is not necessarily harmful in itself, but results in an immune response and a reaction that causes symptoms and disease in a predisposed person, which in turn can cause inconvenience, or even a great deal of misery.
An allergy is everything from a runny nose, itchy eyes and palate to skin rash. It aggravates the sense of smell, sight, tastes and touch causing irritation, extreme disability and sometimes fatality. It occurs when the body’s immune system overreacts to normally harmless substances.
Allergy is widespread and affects approximately one in four of the population in the UK at some time in their lives. Each year the numbers are increasing by 5% with as many as half of all those affected being children (Source Allergy UK).
Hay fever is the commonest form of allergy in the UK. It affects up to 20% of the population, around 10 million people. (source Mintel). At its root, it’s an allergy to pollen. Hay is produced from grass, and grass pollen is the most common culprit for producing hay fever symptoms, but tree pollen, flower pollen, and fungal spores (the fungus equivalent of pollen) also produce the same symptoms. You can do a lot to control your hay fever symptoms, and there are several hay fever Homeopathic remedies to choose from.
Homeopathy and Hay Fever
Many people are aware that Homeopathy can help with long term conditions such as headaches, breathing problems and stress. But Homeopathy can also help seasonal or sporadic symptoms too. Hay fever is caused by the pollen from certain plants drifting on the wind. It enters one’s system through the nose and eyes. This stimulates some cells to produce histamines, which then produce the symptoms associated with hay fever.
More and more people in the UK are turning to complementary therapies to help them with their allergies and hay fever. The advantage of Homeopathy is that it is non invasive, non-addictive and simple to use. It can be used with other medicines and it’s safe to use in pregnancy and for babies and children. Homeopathy is a gentle and effective treatment that does not cause any side effects.
Euphrasia: eyes inflamed, with profuse watering which seems to burn. Can be a thick discharge from eyes and feeling of pressure. Nose streaming. Better in the open air.
Allium cepa: watery discharge from the nose, can drip, leaving nose sore and raw. Watery eyes. Violent sneezing. Better in the open air.
Arsenicum: burning watery discharge from eyes and nose, with tickling building up to a sneeze. At its worst just after midnight. This patient will be restless and anxious.
Nux vom: sneezing fits, nose, eyes and face very irritated and hot. Itching extends to the larynx and trachea. Eyes light-sensitive. Irritated, impatient and snappy.
Lachesis: sneezing fits worse after sleep. Headache and dry stuffed sensation through the head, with red puffy face and sore nostrils and lips. The throat can also be sensitive, especially to pressure.
(Take Homeopathic remedies once or twice a day for between 2 – 4 weeks, if symptoms persist, consult a qualified and registered Homeopath)
Eczema can vary in intensity from patches of dry skin that become inflamed, itchy, red and sore to, in severe cases, the eczema becoming blistered, cracked and bleeding. Eczema often runs in families with a tendency to asthma, hay fever and eczema. Eczema is a chronic complaint and therefore needs to be treated by a qualified and registered Homeopath. Our treatment includes treating the individual symptoms, the patient’s susceptibility to the ailment and also any allergies, all on an individual level. Many people suffering with eczema will find certain things will “trigger” their symptoms; this could be certain foods, weather, fabrics etc. A qualified Homeopath will work with the patient to minimise this sensitivity.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a condition that is associated with an upset gut; it is common in the UK with one in three people suffering at some stage in their life. Usual symptoms include bloating, diarrhoea, and constipation. The symptoms can be changeable and can come and go, often being triggered by certain foods and stress. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a chronic complaint and therefore needs to be treated by a registered Homeopath.
Asthma is a common disease that affects children and adults. Asthma can be linked to allergies with since attacks are often triggered. In Homeopathic treatment we aim to identify the root of the asthma attacks and to strengthen the immune system. Asthma is also a chronic complaint and therefore needs to be treated by a registered Homeopath.
Homeopathic remedies can be purchased from most Chemists and Health Food shops and from Homeopathic pharmacies. In an emergency always contact your GP or Accident and Emergency Department.
